Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace mineral. Zinc functions in over 200 enzymatic reactions in the body. Zinc is vital to the formation of connective tissue, teeth, bone, nails, hair and skin. Zinc may play a role in calcium uptake in bone and modulate the effects of growth hormones. Zinc is considered one of the most important nutrients for the immune system, as it is necessary for healthy antibody, white blood cell, thymus gland and hormone function. Zinc is also essential for normal fetal growth and development, as well as being necessary for the production of brain neurotransmitters.

Precautions

General
Zinc is relatively non-toxic, and although toxicity has been reported in humans, it is uncommon. Ingestion of high levels of zinc can induce a copper deficiency. Zinc toxicity can cause diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, loss of muscle coordination and lethargy.
